APACRS HISTORY

HISTORY OF APACRS

The Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (APACRS) evolved from the Asia-Pacific Intraocular Implant Association (APIIA) at the turn of the millennium to reflect the dynamic developments in cataract and refractive surgery.

Founded in 1987 by Prof Arthur Lim who foresaw the importance of such a development in Asia, the Association has since witnessed rapid growth under the leadership to Professor Graham Barrett.

APACRS holds its annual meeting in association with regional organizations in Asia-Pacific region. The society’s primary function is the dissemination and promotion of advances in the various fields of anterior segment ophthalmic surgery in the Asia-Pacific region. Over the years, the APACRS has developed various instruments to fulfill this function. Among them is EyeWorld Asia-Pacific, a quarterly news magazine that keeps its readers abreast of the latest development while keeping its perspective on what is relevant to the Asia-Pacific region. The magazine is currently read by over 20,000 ophthalmologists in over 20 countries in the region.

Missions

APACRS is a leading organization representing cataract and refractive surgeons. It is a forum for regional interaction in the field of cataract and refractive surgery in Asia equivalent to the ASCRS in America and the ESCRS in Europe.

OBJECTIVES OF APACRS

The objectives of the Association mirrors the dynamism of the times and they are:

  1. Asia-pacific forum for exchange of knowledge and skills in cataract and refractive surgery.
  2. Promote research in cataract and refractive surgery.
  3. Associate with national cataract and/or refractive surgery societies in the Asia-Pacific region and to assist in educational and training issues.
  4. Collaborate with local national associations or organizations to host annual congresses in the region.
  5. Recognize outstanding individuals who have made significant contribution in the training of cataract and refractive surgery with the APACRS Certified Educator Award (A.C.E) at annual meetings.
  6. Support and promote initiatives to advance knowledge, share new developments in cataract and refractive surgery and related fields.

APACRS oversees the cataract and refractive needs of more than half the world’s population.

PERMANENT SECRETARIAT OF APACRS

The Singapore National Eye Centre took over the running of the Secretariat of the Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (APACRS) in January 2003. The new secretariat located at SNEC handles all correspondence and communications for the Association and assists member countries with the organization of the Annual APACRS meeting in the region.
